Marvel's Spider-man Wolftrap Network Review

Story 1

Spider-man games have always been my favorite to play, for many reasons. Marvel’s Spider-man did not disappoint. Leading to a spinoff and a sequel, not tied to any movies, but generating its own universe, within the Spider-verse, inside Marvel Comics’ many universes. Basically, its become its own thing, outside of mainline events. Marvel’s Spider-man Sets a cinematic tone from beginning to end. You’ll even see some friendly faces and a lot of faces who aren’t too happy to see the friendly neighborhood hero. From the moment Peter, puts on the costume and starts swinging, you’re in control. Mostly. The story is given to you while you’re playing, swinging, interacting, and even while unmasked as Peter, Mary Jane, and even Miles Morales. The game doesn’t waste too much of your time on things that don’t develop the story, and it becomes its own Spidey movie how everything comes together.

Gameplay 1

Anything you’ve seen in a spider man game before is done better here. Swinging is the most fluid its ever been. With even more incentive to just swing around with the trick system. It would be awesome if this were expanded! Attacking in missions is more like playing the Batman Arkham series, yes, but it plays to Spider-man’s strengths. This is exactly how I imagine the fights should go. With specials, gadgets, and perks, it’s easy to pick up and play, and feel like the new vigilante in town. It’s great for casual players, but it’s going to take some work to master for you real superheroes.

Graphics 1

This game is amazing. It set a new standard for games following it. The amount of detail goes down to the individual threading in the suit. Swinging through NY never felt or looked better. I can’t help but swing the camera around when pulling off specials in slow motion. As a photographer myself, those action moments right before and during a battle are the best. I felt like Peter getting ready to head to the Daily Bugle to pick up a nice check for some of these action shots of Spidey. Make sure to check out my gallery of gameplay images.

Replayability 1

I’m a Spidey fanatic. I enjoyed the amount of personalization that can be done in this version. Sorry, no new game plus here, but you can continue playing in the City That Never Sleeps DLC. The three episodes contain story and side missions that unlock more costumes and deliver more stories. I’m sure what happens here will carry over. So, even if you’ve had enough of the enemies in the main game, you’ll have your work cut out for you with the upgrades the enemies have in the DLC.

I’m ready to play the next Spider-man game, which is a Miles Morales adventure. I just can’t get enough of saving the streets of NY as Spidey, enjoying the views, and webbing up bad guys to street lights. Just never gets old. I love it!

Multiplayer 0

No multiplayer or co-op at all. Unfortunately, this could have been a new addition with all the Spider-men and women swinging around these days. Some of the story could have been handed to a co-op player, or even drop-in/out co-op. Some co-op of some kind could’ve definitely shaken things up a lot. Even something similar to Assassin’s Creed’s online hide-and-seek missions could be pretty fun in a Spidey game. If executed well.

Cost 1

At release, Marvel’s Spider-Man was 69.99 and eventually dropped in price. I remember buying it for $40 at some point because of an online sale. I recommend waiting for one simply because it does go on sale often. However, it is worth every penny of its original price tag. The cinematic experience alone kept me playing. Wanting to master it keeps me playing it longer.

Conclusion 5/6

After playing through what is now currently on my top 3 Spider-man games, I truly just never get enough Spidey antics. I could pick up Ultimate Spiderman right now and play for hours. If you’re THAT much of a Spidey fan, Marvel’s Spider-Man is a no-brainer of a purchase. If you’re not so sure, especially if you played Marvel’s Avengers before this, then yeah, I understand the hesitation. Marvel’s Spider-man is well polished. In a way that makes Marvel’s Avengers seem absurd. Which it is.

Marvel’s Spider-Man earns itself 5 full moons out of 6. The only downside is that you still can’t share the experience of web-slinging through the city with your friends yet. The game has all the time trials, and side missions, and would be a lot more fun if they would allow some co-op, team-ups, combo specials, etc., and let you create custom challenges and post to a “universal” leaderboard. I love a great single-player game. It’s what I tend to play the most. However, Marvel and any other developers could take some notes from From Software on implementing online features in mainly single-player games.
